Alcohol irritates the skin in up to 66% of cases,  according to a survey conducted by the National Rosacea Society . An alcohol that you must flee from is astringent alcohol. This is used in lotions for oily skin or with acne, and usually appears in the list of ingredients such as denatured alcohol, SD alcohol or propanol.

It is very important to avoid them, since they dehydrate and damage the protective barrier of the skin,  preventing it from regenerating naturally, which causes even more irritation.

2. Certain exfoliating ingredients

Mechanical exfoliations, those in which it is necessary to drag a brush, a towel or a product like sugar on the skin,  are not recommended for rosacea .

In contrast, some exfoliating ingredients that act on a chemical level, without “scratching” the skin, could help remove dead cells in a delicate way. But many of these are not suitable for sensitive skin and much less for rosacea:

Charcoal powder : Does not distinguish between dead cells and healthy tissue of the skin, making it a very aggressive exfoliating agent especially for rosacea.
Grapefruit / grapefruit extract : Makes the blood vessels closer to the surface, causing redness and increasing cases of irritant dermatitis.
Alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs : Although they are the most common chemical exfoliants, they are very abrasive for sensitive skins or with rosacea. Among them are citric acid, lactic acid or glycolic acid.

3. The perfumes and fragrances

If you are the one who opens the products to smell them before buying them, you will be sadly surprised. And is that the fragrances added to the products, whether synthetic or of natural origin, quite often irritate the skin .

In addition, to fix the fragrances and preserve their aroma, some products carry alcohol , another great irritant for rosacea. In the case of rosacea, the fragrance affects up to 29.5% of cases.
